What to Pack for a Smoky Mountain Cabin Stay (and What to Leave at Home)

An open suitcase neatly packed with folded clothes ready for a family vacation

The Smokies will hand you three kinds of weather in one day. Pack for that, and skip the things already sitting in the cabin.

Clothes: layers, always

The temperature drops roughly three to five degrees for every thousand feet you climb. It can be a comfortable 75 in Sevierville and genuinely cold at Newfound Gap. Bring a fleece or hoodie whatever the month, plus a light waterproof — summer afternoon thunderstorms are routine here.

In winter, add a proper coat, hat and gloves. In summer, do not assume the evenings stay warm.

Shoes

Sneakers with real grip or light hiking boots. Smoky Mountain trails are rocky, root-crossed and frequently damp. Flip-flops are for the pool deck and nowhere else. Bring a second pair — wet shoes take days to dry in this humidity.

Swimwear, every single month

This catches people out. The indoor pool is heated and open 24 hours a day all year, and there is a hot tub on the deck. Pack a swimsuit in January the same way you would in July.

Worth bringing

Insect repellent from spring through fall. Sunscreen — you burn faster at elevation. Binoculars for Cades Cove. A cooler for lake and park days. Downloaded maps and playlists, because phone signal disappears inside the national park. If you are bringing a dog, their bed, bowls and leash.

Leave at home

Towels, bed linen and kitchen equipment — all provided. A travel crib and high chair — we have a Pack N Play, a high chair and children’s dinnerware waiting. A portable speaker for the group video call, because the WiFi runs at 495 Mbps and the TVs are Roku. Formal clothes; there is genuinely nowhere in Sevierville that needs them.

One thing for the car

If you are traveling between roughly November and March, four wheel drive is highly recommended. The roads to the cabins are paved and well maintained, but mountain weather turns quickly.

Anything you are unsure about, just ask before you pack. Kelly usually replies within the hour.
