Dollywood is about 15 minutes from Sevierville and it is the one big day out almost every guest ends up doing. It is not a generic theme park. There is genuine Smoky Mountain craft on site — glassblowers, a working blacksmith, a wood carver — alongside some of the best-rated roller coasters in the country. The bluegrass and gospel shows are worth sitting down for even if you did not think they would be.
Go on a weekday if you possibly can. Arrive before the gates open, then walk straight to the back of the park and work forwards. Everybody else lines up at the front, and you will get two extra rides in before the crowd catches up.
The festivals are the real draw. Flower & Food in spring, Harvest Festival through the fall with the pumpkin displays after dark, and the Smoky Mountain Christmas lights in November and December. Those weeks book out early across the whole area, so lock your cabin in before you buy tickets.
Bring ponchos rather than umbrellas — summer afternoon storms roll through fast and then it is sunny again. Budget a full day. You will use it.
