Getting to Sevierville, TN — Plus a Perfect 3-Day Smoky Mountains Itinerary

Newfound Gap Road winding through forest in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

Sevierville is easier to reach than people expect, and once you are here you will not need to drive far for anything.

Flying in

McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville is the closest, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from our cabins depending on traffic on the Parkway. Nashville (BNA) is about three and a half hours west and Atlanta (ATL) roughly three and a half hours south — both worth checking if the fares are much better, since you will want a car regardless.

Driving

Hire a car. There is no practical public transport between the cabins, the park and the attractions, and a group of ten will not enjoy the alternative. Take I-40 to exit 407, then Highway 66 south into Sevierville. That last stretch backs up on summer Saturdays — arrive midweek or after 7pm if you can choose.

Between November and March, four wheel drive is highly recommended.

Day 1 — arrive slowly

Check-in is after 4:00pm. Stop for groceries in Sevierville on the way, unpack, get the grill going, and let everyone swim. The pool is heated and open around the clock, so there is no rush. Do not book anything for this evening.

Day 2 — the national park

Leave by 6:30am for Cades Cove, about 35 minutes away. Drive the 11-mile loop before the traffic, stop at the Cable Mill area, then take in Laurel Falls or the Townsend Wye on the way back. Home by mid-afternoon for the hot tub. Cook in.

Day 3 — Dollywood and the towns

Dollywood is minutes from Sevierville. Go early, do the back of the park first. If theme parks are not your thing, swap in Gatlinburg — 30 minutes out — for the SkyBridge and the shops and stores, or Pigeon Forge for the dinner shows.

Leaving

Check-out is before 10:00am, so pack the night before and give yourself a calm morning rather than a scramble.

Three days is enough for a real taste. Five is better. A week and you will start planning the next one.
